Your first consultation and treatment usually takes about 75 minutes. Subsequent treatments take about 60 minutes. Your full medical case history will be taken (eg details of current conditions, signs and symptoms, past illnesses, family medical history and any medications you are taking). This is followed by body, tongue and pulse diagnoses – all of which help build a comprehensive picture of your internal health.
On the basis of this information, I will work out a treatment plan for you. Everyone is unique and the acupuncture points will be selected specifically to address your individual needs. The needles are inserted and left in for 20 minutes, during which time your pulses will be taken again to see how the treatment is progressing.
On occasions, particularly for musculo-skeletal conditions, therapeutic massage may be given before the acupuncture is done to help relax the muscles.
Sometimes moxa, a herb – artemisia vulgaris, is used to warm a needle or is applied directly to the skin to warm an acupuncture point. This can very soothing and warming.
Cupping may be used to help treat musculo-skeletal disorders where some of the tissue has become hard and painful. It involves creating a vacuum in glass cups and placing or massaging with the cups over the affected area of the body. The suction brings blood to the surface and improves circulation thus relieving tension in the areas.
Do I have to take my clothes off?
For those patients who do not mind taking their clothes off, towels will be used to cover areas where the needles are not inserted. But it’s also possible to have a treatment fully dressed by exposing just the areas where the needles have to be put in.
Does it hurt?
Some points can be a little sensitive but generally the feedback from patients is that they barely felt the needles being inserted and that the treatments are extremely relaxing.
How many treatments will I need?
The frequency and number of sessions depend on your individual conditions. Some problems can change after just one treatment whilst chronic conditions may take longer to treat as they’ve been around for a long time. You should see improvements by 4 to 6 treatments. If I feel that I am not seeing sufficient changes, then I will give you an honest opinion on whether we should continue with Acupuncture or refer you to someone else who might be able to help you. In order to assist with the costs for a series of treatments, if a number of sessions are booked in one go a 10% discount will be given for the whole series.
Is Acupuncture safe?
The needles are single-use, sterile and disposable. Sometimes patients feel a little tired, slight pain in the area or minor bruising. Such reactions are generally rare, minor and short lived.
